A brain break that builds a skill.
Engine Explorers gives your class a shared vocabulary for self-regulation — "what speed is your engine?" — and turns calm-down strategies into something students want to practise. Free, ad-free, no accounts, works on any device with a browser.
Use it as a brain break
A brain break is most useful when it does two things: resets attention and teaches a strategy students can reuse. Each Engine Explorers chapter runs 5–10 minutes and ends with a real tool — a breathing pattern, a wall push, a calming sensory game — that transfers straight to the classroom.
- Morning entry: a 5-minute engine check-in at the door. Students tap their speed on the dial; you see who arrives low or high.
- After transitions: one breathing pacer (balloon, star, or square) before maths or after recess.
- Whole-class reset: the Group Brain Break mode runs a full-screen, teacher-led cooldown with no profiles or saved data.
- Station work: the Toolbox Workshop chapters work on tablets as independent stations.
Mapping to CASEL SEL competencies
Self-awareness
Body-map and engine-dial activities teach students to notice what their body feels like and name the speed.
Self-management
Every chapter practises a concrete regulation strategy: breathing, heavy work, sensory calm, slowing down.
Responsible decision-making
Social scenarios in Friendship Falls ask students to pick the right tool for the moment — and try again when they miss.
Practical classroom tips
- No wrong answers: the game never punishes a "wrong" tool choice — it coaches and retries. Tell students the same: every engine is allowed to be any speed.
- Create a calm corner: set up one device (or a printed Engine Speed Check-In chart) where a student can go, check their engine, and run one tool.
- Use the language all day: "Your engine looks high — what would help it come down?" works in the corridor, at lunch, and in class.
- Whole school: the same vocabulary across classrooms (low / just right / high) makes regulation part of school culture, not one teacher's system.
Engine Explorers is informed by the Alert Program framework, CASEL SEL competencies, and mindfulness practice. It is an educational tool, not a therapeutic intervention. Free for classroom use.
