A practice tool children actually want to use.
Engine Explorers turns the interoception work you already do — noticing body signals, choosing a regulation strategy, practising it — into a game a child can play at home between sessions. Informed by the Alert Program, built around the engine-speed metaphor.
Framework fidelity notes
The game is informed by the Alert Program's engine-speed framework (low / just right / high) and by CASEL SEL competencies and mindfulness practice. It does not reproduce Alert Program materials and is not affiliated with it. Key design choices that matter clinically:
- No wrong answers. The engine dial, body map, and social scenarios are errorless-learning — children are coached and retried, never told they failed. This is deliberate and matches how interoceptive skill builds without shame.
- Tools are practised physically, not just named. Slow sips, wall pushes with a 10-count, breathing pacers, sensory calming — the same heavy-work and deep-pressure strategies used in OT sessions.
- Up- AND down-regulation. Most children's resources only teach calming down. The game includes low-engine wake-up tools (movement, bright light, strong input), which is core to Alert Program practice.
- No streaks, no guilt, no notifications. The anti-dark-pattern design means a child who misses days is never punished — regulation practice should not become another source of anxiety.
Session-use ideas
- Assessment window: watch which tools the child gravitates to in the Toolbox Workshop — it's a quick interoception and sensory-preference snapshot.
- Home programme: assign one chapter + one real-world mission per week; the child's grown-up confirms missions with a hold-to-confirm button, so homework is collaborative.
- Telehealth: the game runs in any browser, including screen-share, with a fullscreen Group Brain Break mode for co-regulation sessions.
- Generalisation: the 15 real-world missions move skills off-screen — "try a wall push before homework", "notice your engine at dinner" — exactly the transfer step that makes clinic work stick.
Clinical considerations
The game is free, cookieless, stores all data on-device, and contains no ads or in-app purchases — suitable for recommendation to families.
Engine Explorers is informed by the Alert Program framework (an independent framework — not affiliated), CASEL SEL competencies, and mindfulness practice. It is not a medical or therapeutic device.
